WELCOME

This is the first of our monthly Newsletter/Announcements

We've thought about starting a newsletter many times over the years,
but it's been hard to do. In this first edition, we've plunged right
in so that we can let you know what we're up to. We're sure that the
content and the format will evolve as we gain experience with the
medium. Please let us know if you find our efforts useful.

What follows is a brief overview of what we're up to, some
announcements about workshops, lectures and products, and some ideas
and resources that we'd like to share beyond what word of mouth alone
can accomplish.

INTERMEDIATE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (APRIL 27-28)

The Intermediate Digital Photography Workshop is coming up in just a
few days. If you are interested and haven't yet registered, do take a
moment to visit our web site to learn more:

http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-int.html

This workshop is designed for people with some experience in digital
imaging (such as our intro class). We will work in the studio and in
the field with high-end scanning and instant-capture digital cameras.
The workshop will explore photography's evolution into a
digitally-based medium, using the technology and discussing the
implications and opportunities of this dramatic change.

We'll be covering many topics in depth:
-digital imaging and cameras
-scanning
-image editing
-color management and profile creation

As of this writing, we don't plan to offer this Intermediate class
again until the fall.

April 27-28, 2002, 9-5 pm, includes lunch.
On site at the Stephen Johnson Photography Studios
Pacifica, CA (near San Francisco)

FEATURED PRINT OFFER FOR MAY 2002
Orchids

We are inaugurating a special print offering each month. This is a
great opportunity to own a very affordable fine-art photograph.
Orders will be taken during a 30-day period, then printed and shipped
within two weeks after the close. When it's over, it's over. These
prints won't be available again at this price.

Created using the breakthrough technology of the Foveon X3 sensor,
this detailed 11"x11" photograph of an Orchid can be yours, matted to
16x20, and ready to frame for $95 plus shipping. This is
significantly less than our standard 8"x10" fee, ($200), and is a much
larger print! This print at this price will only be offered from now
until May 31.

You can check out this month's print at:
http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special.html

PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURE SERIES

Digital Printing: Art and Technology
May 6, 2002. 7- 8pm

Creating exquisite inkjet color prints combines an artist's eye, a
craftsperson's skill, and a photographer's passion. I'll go through
my procedures for preparing digital files and finessing accurate color
for fine art prints. Other topics will include paper choices,
emerging technologies for profiling, ink longevity, rethinking what a
photographic based print can and should look like, monochrome and
color printing.

Admission: $5. RSVP is required as capacity is limited. Call us at
(650) 355-7507 or email michelle@sjphoto.com

WORKSHOPS COMING RIGHT UP

- Digital Printing Workshop (May 1 - May 2)

This workshop focuses exclusively on fine-art digital printing,
primarily using Epson inkjet printers. It concentrates on inkjet
printing with pigments and black/gray ink combinations on coated and
rag papers.

- Landscape Photography Workshop (May 7 - May 10)

This digital photography field workshop includes studio work and
fieldwork. The workshop will be a dynamic combination of a
traditional landscape photography workshop while diving deep into the
digital age.

THE LANGUAGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY TV SERIES

PBS KCSM-TV (Channel 60 in the SF Bay Area) is airing "The Language Of
Photography," a production that examines how photographs can
profoundly effect our perception of the world. I was interviewed last
summer and am one of seven photographers featured.

The program airs Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM and nationwide
broadcast is expected for this fall.

Check out http://www.ekcsm.org/ for more info.

WHAT'S UP

- The Digital National Parks Project

The field photography for the parks project is basically done, any
additional work will just give us an even richer selection of work
from which to choose. To date, we've traveled about 75,000 miles and
worked in over 50 parks.

We're moving into the public phase of the project, bringing these
years of work into final form. Our current plan is to produce the
book and DVD in the first phase, followed by the traveling exhibition
and documentary video. This, of course, means a new fund-raising
effort, which we are just getting underway. Interested Angels are
welcome to get in touch.

The preliminary book design is already 115 pages and growing toward
its 256 page target. Meanwhile much work has been done on the DVD,
the exhibit and on the video. The DVD has been prototyped for
computer use and tests are being done on stand-alone players. We
believe that this is the comprehensive result we have looked forward
to and are very excited by how it is shaping up. We are also
experimenting with home DVD slide show disks and variations.

- The new Foveon sensor

I've been consulting with Foveon for a few years now and am impressed
by their innovations. When they described their full resolution color
chip to me a few years back, I was very excited by its prospects. I
started testing the camera last summer and have made a number of good
quality photographs. We were quite busy in February with this work
and I've posted some samples on my website:

http://www.sjphoto.com/web-special

I'll write more about this exciting development in the next newsletter.

STUFF I LIKE

- A Few Books

There are so many excellent books related to photography that I have
enjoyed over the years. Each month I plan to write a bit about a book
that has moved me, influenced me, or simply got me to work harder and
care more.

- Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. 1993.
Image Continuum Press, PO Box 5243, Santa Cruz, CA 95062-5243
ISBN 0-9614547-3-3

This is a book that confronts our love/hate relationship to making
art, including the imperative and the confidence assault. Well worth
reading, written by two thoughtful photographers.

- Beauty in Photography. Robert Adams.
Aperture, 1981.
ISBN 0-89381-080-0 (cloth)
ISBN 0-89381-087-8 (paper)

One of the most cogent expressions of beauty, photography and the
effort to join the two into works that move us and make a difference
in our lives. Out of print, but worth finding. We've seen it now and
then in www.barnesandnoble.com's Out of Print books section.

- Good Gear

Solux near daylight MR16 bulbs. I print to daylight color temperature
(5000-6500°k). I believe it is our only constant, variable though it
may be. Finding an artificial light source near daylight has
traditionally been no small task. The Solux bulbs rise to the
occasion. These bulbs are particularly useful with pigment prints
that overreact to changes in lighting color temperature. You can
learn more at http://www.eiko-ltd.com.

- Other Workshops

Al Weber Landscape Photography Workshops. (831) 624-5535

There's no finer photography instructor than Al Weber. He has been a
friend and partner in many projects over the years and I am proud to
recommend his workshops. Time spent with Al is well worth the effort.
This is the last year of his full field workshop schedule. You can
learn more at
http://www.geocities.com/~morrell/awnews2002.html

----------------------------------------------------------------------
PARK LANDS

I've been serving as a Board member of the Pacifica Land Trust for a
year and a half. I became involved because Mori Point, a dramatic
headland jutting into the Pacific, was once again on the auction block
for commercial development in late 2000. In response, we undertook a
massive effort to create and mail a fund-raising plea to help buy the
land. The Trust for Public Land, the California Coastal Conservancy
and the Pacifica Land Trust outbid the developers and the land entered
the National Park system in late March 2002 as part of the Golden Gate
National Recreation Area.

A celebration of the headlands becoming park lands will be held on May 5,
2002.
