Our New Home Page.

We hope it is an improved look, is easier to navigate and makes the photography more accessible. It has encouraged us to better organize and bring up-front some web features that were previously somewhat buried on the site.

Feedback will be appreciated on the new home page as we will start carrying the design deeper into the site.

FEATURED PRINT OFFER
April 2007

Ice Arch, Antarctica 2007
11x14 Pigment Print on gelatin cotton paper

$195 each

After much comment on this image as our newsletter banner photo last month, we have decided to make it this month's featured print.

We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is offered through April 30. We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by May 15th.

About the Program
Each month we offer a signed, original print, at a special price. This is a great opportunity to own a very affordable fine-art photograph. Orders are taken for a 30-day period, then printed and shipped within two weeks after the close. When it's over, it's over, these prints won't be available again at this price.

THE VIEW FROM HERE

Art, Solitude and Community

Making art is mostly solitary. That is often true in fieldwork, and frequently true in the studio while printing or working on other careful and detailed tasks. It is not always by choice, but being alone can force concentration and single-mindedness. It is very good for the things you want to do. Not so good for the tasks that are being avoided.

We make art out of compulsion, but we also make it to share. We want to transport others to the moment, to the magical scene that made us pick up our camera. Sometimes we even have particular people in mind for sharing a particular photograph. It is almost always true for me that I am trying to touch a particular sensibility. I think that instinct to share is part of my compulsion to create.

It is interesting that so much of the artistic experience is solitary. It may well make community even more important. Building a community of people interested in photography has been an ongoing agenda since photography's earliest days. In many ways, that's why Ansel Adams and others founded the f64 Group, and a major reason for creating the sadly now defunct Friends of Photography.

It is in this spirit of building photography community that we are creating a new gallery event. For a long time we've been planning more free events, and have decided to start a Photo Film Night once a month that can also serve as a gathering point of common interest for the Bay Area photo community. We hope you can join us for this and our monthly critique sessions.

Changes at Stephen Johnson Photography

We run the business here with careful planning and great attention to detail. The core values of furthering the arts, honest dealings and with a deep commitment to education have motivated much what we've done. Regardless of planning, it sometimes seems like we make up what we do as we go. It's improvisation and instinct following passion and commitment. But it is sometimes hard, and often stressful.

We've had some changes here, some rewarding, some challenging. Personnel is moving around and helpers/visionaries/interns are helping in ways I could barely imagine while at the same time taking on new projects elsewhere. Growth happens in many directions. The workshops have greatly benefitted from the help of Jim Rubino and Rob Strieby (inventors of SATA), and my old friend John Csongradi. John has taken on great responsibility for the printers, particularly the new HPZ3100. My assistants Michelle and Elizabeth continue to make the entire workings possible.

Michelle has gotten busy on outside projects and Elizabeth has been filling in with more hours and has been of enormous help. John has ensconced himself with his new HPZ3100 printer and we're seeing less of him lately. We do hope to see some great prints as a result.

However Jim and his old partner Rob Strieby have accelerated some product development projects which could be quite exciting. Film editor Will Nordby has come onboard to help with special video projects, the first of which should be done soon.

The Parks book is in editing with a well respected and skilled editor Serena Herr. It is a pleasure to have her working on the book. We hope to have it in the stores by September.

WORKSHOP NEWS
* Upcoming Workshops
We hope you find our selection of classes interesting and useful for your needs. We take the imparting of information and the empowerment of our students quite seriously. The digital age has considerably enhanced our ability to teach, and we believe your ability to capture what you see. This program is designed to help you benefit from both of these advances. We hope you can join us on a workshop.

* Mendocino and the North Coast

May 4-5, 2007

Dive into the lush seascape of California's North Coast on this intensive two-day photographic workshop to Mendocino. Dark, musty redwood rainforests pierced by sunbeam shafts, spectacular rocky cliffs with the tumbling surf below, and rolling shoreline dunes will fill our two days with remarkable varied photographic experiences. The north coast architecture of this beautiful little township and the fishing port of Noyo will add plenty of man-made subject matter to our weekend. And, of course, we will find time to sample a few of Mendocino's good eating establishments.

The misty north coast light will likely be as much our subject matter as the landforms. This special quality of light is part of what makes this area so visually interesting and dynamic. Come prepared for rain, fog and sun.

Fine-Art Digital Printing Hands-On
May 22-25, 2007
Stephen Johnson Studios & Gallery
Pacifica, California.

This workshop focuses exclusively on improving your fine-art digital printing in our new Digital Lab, primarily using Epson inkjet printers. Concentration will be on inkjet printing with color pigments and black/gray ink combinations on coated and rag papers. Learn from the digital pioneer how he obtains his impressive results during four days of lectures, printing, and feedback in the studio.

We will cover workflow issues, color management, correcting color casts, adjustment layers, custom profile generation, editing and inspection. There being no magic bullet to making good prints, the workshop will also explore old fashioned testing, careful color judgements and interactive honing in on the best print possible.
