Welcome to the February 2004 edition of the Stephen Johnson
Photography Newsletter.

This issue includes a wrap-up of our Death Valley Workshop, a last
chance to register for the Yosemite in Winter Workshop, and an
announcement of a new 2004 calendar.

My friend Pete Sucy and I drove to the top of Mount Desert Island's
Cadillac Mountain wanting an overview and seeking relief from the
lowlands of the east -- a land rare with horizons can often make it
difficult to get one's bearings. On top, the vista was complex and
expansive, suggesting a sunrise visit the next day. From October
through March, sunrise is seen here first in the United States. The
next morning was quite beautiful, watching the sun rise over the
Atlantic and nearby islands, then hide behind a layer of thin clouds.
I photographed the expanse, but walking back to the car I felt like I
had missed something essential. As we made our way along the trail, I
saw what I had been instinctively looking for, a play of granite, fall
color and soft sky. There is nothing like color under soft light.
This photograph has remained a favorite of mine from the Parks
Project.

We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame
for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is
offered through February 29. We'll be taking orders until then, and
shipping them out by March 15th.

About the Program

Each month we offer a signed, original print, at a special price.
This is a great opportunity to own a very affordable fine-art
photograph. Orders are taken for a 30-day period, then printed and
shipped within two weeks after the close. When it's over, it's over.
These prints won't be available again at this price.

DEATH VALLEY WORKSHOP WRAP-UP

We had a great time in Death Valley, including a spectacular sunrise
at Dante's View. The Magical Digital Bus again worked very well,
providing us with a digital home to review, edit and print the work we just
did in this amazing desert. Our comments on composition and image
editing seemed to make a positive difference for many in the group.
Nick and Michelle provided great support. Thanks to them and the
great students!

numerous photo workshops and this one rates in my top 3 of all
time, thanks.

PACIFICA 2004 CALENDAR

We have created a 2004 Pacifica Calendar, a bit late for the year's start,
but available now to everyone. It is part of our ongoing effort to build a
greater sense of community in our studio's San Francisco Bay area home town.

Based on our design for the Mono Lake Calendars of the late 80's, the
calendar is printed on our new HP Color LaserJet 9500 (which is doing
a very good job). It may not be offset, but it works well.
The callendar hangs 11x17 when open on wall. It sells for $10.
