New Gallery Event.....
*Photography Critique Session
Thursday evening, March 24, 2005, 7-10pm
$45 per session for showing work
$25 per session to attend
Stephen Johnson Studios & Gallery
Pacifica, California.
Feedback on our work has proven critical to many of us involved in the arts. In this emerging age of digital photography, it is hard to find people knowledgeable in the technology and with a background and experience in the fine arts.
After many requests, we are initiating monthly critiquing sessions at our studio in Pacifica, California. The session will be conducted from 7 until 10pm (if needed), and refreshments will be available. Attendance will be limited to 10 students wishing to show work, others may attend to listen and learn. Prints or digital files are acceptable forms of presentation. Projection will be available. Registration to show work requires the pre-submission of sample work.
Our first session went very well, we hope you can join us at future sessions.

As an old film-darkroom photographer, I sometimes find all the choices of digital imaging to be overwhelming. I have especially struggled with printing. I recently attended a Stephen Johnson Critique Session at his Pacifica studio in hopes of getting some feedback on my digital prints. I have never learned more in such a compact amount of time. Steve is generous and giving of his vast knowledge of digital imaging. He also gives advise in a manner that not only improves your technique but also refines your photographic vision. I would highly recommend these critiques to anyone interested in being a better photographer.

Tokosha Mountains. Denali National Park. 1995.
11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper
Near the end of a three-week journey to Alaska, my assistant Darin Steinberg and I stopped to look back at Denali from the south. It was good to see the mountain, as we had not seen it from Wonder Lake a few days before, but the real visual fascination was the range of cathedral-like spires of the Tokosha range. The color infrared I made was always envisioned as a black and white as represented here, using only the red channel.
I have often used this photograph as the test image as digital black and white printing technolgies have evolved. It is very unforgiving in its demand for rich blacks at the bottom end of the tonal scale and smooth tone transitions through light gray in the sky.
