PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURE SERIES

Stephen Johnson, Aesthetics and High End Digital Photography
June 3, 2002. 7- 8:30pm

"Stephen Johnson's filmless large-format photography rides on the
'bleeding edge' of photography's transition to a digital media.
Schooled in the traditions of fine-art western landscape photography,
Johnson has taken his understanding of traditional photographic
processes and brought those skills to bear on the emerging
technologies and aesthetics of digital photography. He has worked
with technology companies to achieve the best of what image making can
be, and pushed his own vision of how we see and record light in the
natural world. This has led him to conclude that the way we have
traditionally captured images with silver-based photography has been a
poor and distortive view of the real and rich world before our eyes.
His photographs look almost "unphotographic" in their clarity and
purity of color. He shows us a world we know, but rarely see on
paper. His is a truly remarkable vision."
[From an exhibit at The Photographer's Gallery, Palo Alto, CA, 1998.]

The advance of high-end digital cameras, with their unique abilities
to see and record light, have the potential to change many of the ways
we think about photography, including how we think a photograph should
look. With their extended dynamic range and unprecedented color
accuracy, digital sensors can offer dramatically higher image quality
than film. The photographic print is evolving concurrently with
direct digital printing, now moving onto pigmented prints lasting
hundreds of years on a wide variety of substrates.

Spend an evening with Stephen in his gallery discussing light, beauty,
composition, and the landscape. Learn about one man's vision of this
brave new digital world from the photographer who has been on the
bleeding edge of this new technology for years.

Seating limited to 20.

Admission: $5. RSVP is required as capacity is limited.

FEATURED PRINT OFFER FOR JUNE 2002
"Dune at Dusk, Mono Lake" from the 1980 exhibition "At Mono Lake"

http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_june_2002.html

"My first visit to Mono Lake left me fascinated with its strangeness
and intrigued by its beauty. As the years passed I've felt compelled
to return many times, drawn by a magical light and expansive space
I've rarely seen. Slowly, I began to understand a few of the lake's
moods and the tragedy unfolding on its shores."

"In 1979 the idea of a photographic exhibition emerged from
conversations with David Gaines and others of the Mono Lake Committee.
Photographers Al Weber and Don Worth agreed to help with print
selection. Brett Weston, a self-declared 'Mono-maniac', and Ansel
Adams offered to lend prints to the effort. Very encouraged, and with
the help of many photographers, I built the traveling exhibition 'At
Mono Lake'."

The exhibition reached an audience of well over four million people
from 1980-1989 and selections are currently on display at the Mono
Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center.

This month's print, "Dune at Dusk, Mono Lake", was featured in the
exhibition and the exhibition catalog. It is an excellent example of
the affection for pastel color that has been central to my work for
twenty years.

We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame
for $195.00. This print at this price is offered through June 30.
We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by July 15.
This photograph won't be available again at this price.

More information on the exhibition is available at:
http://www.sjphoto.com/aml-home.html

Copies of the cloth-bound limited edition of the "At Mono Lake"
exhibition catalog are available at:

We'd like to thank everyone who ordered "Orchid", May's featured
print. If you haven't ordered yet, there's still time. The last day
to order is May 31. You can find more information at:

BEGINNING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (JUNE 26-27)

We have a Beginning Digital Photography Workshop coming up at the end
of June. If you're interested and haven't yet registered, do take a
moment to visit our web site to learn more:

http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp.html

The workshop will concentrate on digital photography's possibilities
as a fine-arts photography tool, using Macintosh computers, Adobe's
Photoshop software and inkjet printers. All necessary equipment will
be provided during the workshop and topics will be discussed in
non-technical terms.

You'll leave having a good grasp of the kind of equipment you need to
accomplish your goals, budgets, priorities, and best of all, what you
can do with these ever more capable and amazing tools.

The nearby Pacific Ocean beach should provide a fairly nice field trip
opportunity.

June 26-27, 2002, 9-5 pm, includes lunch.
On site at the Stephen Johnson Photography Studios
Pacifica, CA (near San Francisco)
Enrollment is limited.
$600

----------------------------------------------------------------------
DIGITAL PRINTING WORKSHOP (JULY 9-10)

This workshop focuses exclusively on fine-art digital printing,
primarily using Epson inkjet printers. It concentrates on inkjet
printing with pigment inks and black/gray ink combinations on coated
and rag papers. You can find all of the details at:

http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-print-wkshp.html

We will cover workflow issues, color management, correcting color
casts, adjustment layers, custom profile generation, editing and
inspection. Since there is no magic bullet for making good prints,
the workshop will also explore old fashioned testing, careful color
judgments and interactively honing in on the best print possible.
Finally, we will also introduce a variety of fine art papers and
discuss their visual qualities, advantages, and problems.

Our discussions will also include an exploration of print aesthetics
in the digital age, including:

- what makes for a beautiful print?
- do the new possibilities enhance our notion of what photography
can be?
- are we imitating traditional photographic processes or
discovering something new?

July 9-10, 2002, 9-5 pm, includes lunch.
On site at the Stephen Johnson Photography Studios
Pacifica, CA (near San Francisco)
Enrollment is limited.
$600

concerning the opportunities and challenges facing us in the digital
world.

STUFF I LIKE

- Good Books

Real World Photoshop 6.0. David Blatner and Bruce Fraser. Peachpit Press.
2001. ISBN: 0201721996.

This book is a great resource for all that use Photoshop as a tool for
serious photographic and imaging projects. This has to be the most
useful book on Photoshop that I've seen, it's thoroughly researched
and well written.

- Good Gear

I've been using the Gitzo 1548 carbon fiber tripod for many years now
and it has dramatically lowered the overall weight of my gear while
still providing the stability and precision that my work requires.
It's been a great addition to my toolset.

- Workshops

My friend Bill Atkinson (creator of HyperCard and an experienced
photographer) is leading some excellent workshops on making Lightjet
prints from film scans.

Bill has made a thorough study of the art and science of image
processing, he's a fine photographer and an experienced software
engineer whom I've been proud to call my friend for many years.
