Welcome to the November 2003 edition of the Stephen Johnson
Photography Newsletter.

This issue includes an invitation to a private opening of new images
from "With A New Eye", a new featured print, and a short review of Photoshop

FEATURED PRINT OFFER

Aerial, Point Reyes

When I fly to photograph, we try and arrange for the door to be taken
off the aircraft so that I have a full picture window view. Last June
we did a flight up the San Francisco coast towards Pt. Reyes in
somewhat cloudy weather, resulting in some spectacular views. We
circled over Drakes Estero many times and one of the resulting images
is this month's featured print.

We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame
for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is
offered through November 30. We'll be taking orders until then, and
shipping them out by December 15th.

About the Program

Each month we offer a signed, original print, at a special price.
This is a great opportunity to own a very affordable fine-art
photograph. Orders are taken for a 30-day period, then printed and
shipped within two weeks after the close. When it's over, it's over.
These prints won't be available again at this price.

Stephen's work in the national parks.

Digital Restoration and Retouching of Old Photographs

Monday December 8, 7-9pm
Admission: $15

Stephen has been working restoring old photograph for over 30
years. Originally working by hand with a lot of spot-tone, he's be
doing it digitally since the late 80s. His profile in Communication
Arts back in 1995 even highlighted one of his techniques. The
lecture will go through a number of restoration techniques, all
designed to repair damage but maintain the original's real content so
as not to make fiction out of precious pieces of personal history or
documentary work.

Just in time for the holiday season, these techniques may help you
repair that precious image to share with the family.

SOFTWARE

The New Photoshop CS

This upgrade, Photoshop 7 to version 8 (CS), is the most useful I've
seen in years. In some ways, it could be called the photo upgrade.
The program is now almost entirely 16 bit friendly, including
Adjustment Layers, extremely wide or tall images are now possible (up
to 300,000 pixels wide) liberating us from the dreaded 30,000 pixel
limit. There is a live histogram that can be kept visible as you edit
your image and the improvements in the File Browser and image
management are significant.
