Grasses, Paoha Island Mono Lake. 1979
11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper
My first visit to Paoha Island on Mono Lake was a fascinating experience, with obsidian-lined volcanic cones on the north shore, hot springs in the south and hills of ancient lake bottom in-between. On the south end of the island, near an abandoned mineral springs resort from the 1920s, I found these waves of grasses. Having carried the 4x5 out to the island via canoe, and lugged it around the island, I was delighted to find these silvery grasses near our camp at twilight.
Many nice photographs came from the trip, this was the one that cried out to be printed when the film was developed. The print made at the time broke out with a beautfiful silvery glow when developed in a selectol-soft/dektol sequence. The effect never repeated itself on subsequent prints. The original was made with 4x5 black and white negative film and scanned from the master 11x14 gelitan-silver print.
