Granite and Brush, Acadia National Park, Maine. 1995..
11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper
My friend Pete Sucy and I drove to the top of Mount Desert Island's Cadillac Mountain wanting an overview and seeking relief from the lowlands of the east -- a land rare with horizons can often make it difficult to get one's bearings. On top, the vista was complex and expansive, suggesting a sunrise visit the next day. From October through March, sunrise is seen here first in the United States. The next morning was quite beautiful, watching the sun rise over the Atlantic and nearby islands, then hide behind a layer of thin clouds. I photographed the expanse, but walking back to the car I felt like I had missed something essential. As we made our way along the trail, I saw what I had been instinctively looking for, a play of granite, fall color and soft sky. There is nothing like color under soft light. This photograph has remained a favorite of mine from the Parks Project.
