Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. 1994.
11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper
My first trip to Shenandoah was timed for the fall color and was very impressive. The array of hardwoods turning was truly amazing, both for its variety and its expanse. Of course the color was gorgeous, but so much more than I had seen in photographs. It was real, intense but restrained, varied in its complexity and saturation, not at all the overblown shout of indistinguishable super saturated reds and yellows I had been seeing through color photography. It was still difficult to photograph, the color was everywhere and sorting out line and form that worked toward order and design was an effort. This photograph worked well for me and was first reproduced in the 1997 Calendar I did for Apple Computer..
