Digital Photo Field Workshop with the Magical Digital Bus
March 7, 7am-6pm

Join Photoshop Hall of Famer, Stephen Johnson for an exciting pre-conference landscape photography workshop, employing the Magical Digital Bus, a fully equipped digital lab on wheels. This one-day excursion will take 20 students for a jam-packed-day to the ancient Valley of Fire! Located only 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas, this park derives its name from the amazing red sandstone formations rising above the stark beauty of the desert. Ancient trees and early man are represented in the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old petroglyphs.

We'll provide the transportation and lunch, bring your digital camera, your photographer's eyes and curiosity! Bus time and field work will be split between photographing and analyzing students' work in the bus lab. Steve has developed this innovative "in the field" teaching technique over the past two years, yielding enormous student satisfaction and success. He says simply "the digital bus is the most powerful teaching tool I've encountered in 25 years of teaching photography." Limited to 20 people. $250

Image Restoration Tuesday March 8, 2005. 2-3pm Wednesday March 9, 2005. 2-3pm Messing with history is really bad karma. It devalues the very work we are trying to "enhance." Antiquity is not merely about charming quaintness, it is about real people, who lived real lives, with very real loves and sorrows. The instinct now to process them into contemporary notions of "restoration" in Photoshop should be done with restraint, great care and respect for actual image content. Explore this process hands-on with the guy that has been teaching it for 15 years. $45.
Image Editing for Photographers Tuesday March 8, 2005. 4-5pm Wednesday March 9, 2005. 10-11am The controls that can be asserted over the digital photograph are rather impressive. Many are analogous to traditional darkroom techniques, and some have darkroom equivalents only in historical lust. Many of these possibilities that never existed before do constitute advances in artistic control over the photograph. This exploration uses Adobe Photoshop capabilities as a means of exploring the digital photographic possibilities. $45.
Creating Custom Color Printer Profiles Wednesday March 9, 2005. 12-1pm & 4-5pm Color management could also be known as color confusion, marketing hyperbole, or a black hole. There has been much oversimplification and much over-complication of this subject. In fact, done carefully and with reasonable expectations, managing your digital color workflow can make a tremendous positive difference in overall usability of a digital photography system. We'll tackle printer profiling in this hands-on session. $45.
