Stephen Johnson Photography Scholarships

Workshop Scholarship Program

In order to make workshops available to people who cannot afford them and to support students studying photography, we have started a photography workshop scholarship program. We will try to reserve a spot in every class we can, particularly field workshops. Scholarships are available to full-time college students enrolled in a photography program as a major. Let people know who you think might be interested. Applications must be for a particular workshop.

To apply, please download the application form and send it to us by mail or email

Student Experiences

Stephen and I met while working at an east coast workshop in the summer of 2010. I was intrigued by the way Stephen ran his classes and became convinced that participating in one of his private workshops would greatly enrich my academic career. After I started the second year of my M.F.A. Degree at Savannah College of Art and Design, I discovered that Stephen was kind enough to offer scholarships to students who were currently working on their photographic degree. This sounded like a fantastic opportunity, so I applied and within a few days I was on a plane to the workshop at Mono Lake California. For five days we chased the beautiful light that graces the terrain of Mono Lake and The Eastern Sierras. I couldn’t have imagined having a better tour guide than Stephen Johnson. I knew that I would gain technical experience as a photographer, but I was unaware of how truly knowledgeable Stephen is of the locations of his workshops. He became a tour guide for us, enriching the experience with geological history and a scientific knowledge of the area that only comes with many years of exploration. Everyone in the group was happy to stay up late at night to share the days photos and I never once heard a complaint about getting up at dawn to catch the sunrise.

My experience with Stephen Johnson was valuable and I highly recommend applying for a workshop scholarship!
