Internships at Stephen Johnson Photography

intern: a person who works as an apprentice or trainee in an occupation or profession to gain practical experience, and sometimes also to satisfy legal or other requirements for being licensed or accepted professionally.

Internships at Stephen Johnson Photography

These are nonpaying internships with a commitment generally of at least six months to make it worthwhile to both parties. The hours are M-F 10am to 5pm with intermittent weekends on workshops and arranged hours during our summer travels. Individual interns have differing daily time commitments. Interns help with print care, gallery and lab maintenance, photographic archiving and indexing, copyright filings, matting and framing, gallery outreach and most importantly internet and networking outreach.

Interns assist with workshops and are free to attend any workshop. Most all of our lab facilities are available for intern use. Independent time needs to be arranged for such use so as not to confuse intern duties with personal work.

Working with Steve has been an absolutely incredible experience.  I have spent numerous hours working side by side with Steve while he teaches his studio workshops, not only being an extra hand during the workshops, but continuously learning from his broad knowledge of photography and the technical side of the craft.  Working in his studio, you get to learn the intricacies of running a business and are given the opportunity to share creative ideas.  This past winter, I helped Steve curate his exhibit, Exquisite Earth. I got to work with Steve during every step of the process – from an idea to the hanging of the final prints on the gallery walls.  I could not be more thankful for the opportunity I have had to learn from such a wonderful mentor and friend.

Previous Intern Quotes

While completing my fine arts education at San Francisco State University, I had the good fortune of being chosen as a teaching assistant by the consummate digital photographer, Stephen Johnson. During the hours I spent in his Pacifica studio, Steve generously divulged the wisdom he’s gained as a result of his pioneering efforts in digital photography.

Assisting Stephen Johnson’s teaching workshops substantially sharpened my photography skills and endowed me with fringe benefits that are unavailable outside of a world-class photographer’s studio. I came into contact with dozens of other professional photographers, and I familiarized myself with the inner workings of a photography studio, including the business aspects of the photography profession.

Working with Stephen Johnson was one of the most educational experiences I’ve had on my journey towards life as a photography pro.

-Monica McCardle

Working for Stephen Johnson was educational and enjoyable. Stephen’s management style is to convey his objectives and let you have the freedom to research and recommend solutions. He is a fair and flexible mentor that collaborated with my own objectives, including suggesting ways to expand my scope in photography.  The experience of working with Stephen on variety of projects, both in the field and studio, I will cherish forever.

-Erick Leskinen

Working with Stephen Johnson was a once in a lifetime experience that not only gave me a better appreciation and understanding of the technical and aesthetic characteristics of digital photography and fine art image making but helped me to discover a deeper way to appreciate and advocate for our natural environment through the art of photography.

-Eric Doyle
