January, 2003

Eroded Hills, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. 1987.
11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper

This photograph of Eroded Hills at John Day Fossil Beds National
Monument in Oregon is from my series "Color Pastel Abstracts." The
series began when I looked at the direction my color work was taking
and saw a pattern of ever greater appreciation for light-filled pastel
color. It is a style that has continued to grow and is much in
evidence in my newest work on the digital National Parks project.

We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame
for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is
offered through January 31. We'll be taking orders until then, and
shipping them out by February 15'th.

This photograph won't be available again at this price.

Holiday Open House, Thank You!

The Holiday Open House was a great success! Thanks to so many of
you for coming by. And of course, a special thanks to those of you
who took advantage of the discounts and purchased prints. I was
pleased to see how much interest there was in local work from the
coastal Bay Area. The local gallery will likely become a permanent
part of our exhibition space and we will make a concerted effort to
print more of the photographs I have been making in and around the
San Francisco coast.

Print Collections

* Oakland Museum permanent collection

The Oakland Museum has purchased another Stephen Johnson print for
their permanent collection. The photograph of "Trees, Fitzgerald
Reserve" was the largest print in the "Ansel Adams: Inspiration and
Influence" show last summer and will now be part of their special
collections. Special thanks to Rich Edwards and Laird Foshay for
making this purchase possible.

* New York panoramic print arrives in NYC

New York Art Commissioner Deborah Bershad accepted our print
donation of the New York Skyline Panoramic in November. We received
a nice thank you letter from Mayor Bloomberg and ideas are evolving on
how the photograph might be useful in a permanent memorial to what
was lost in the attacks on September 11.

A big thank you goes to my agent Stephen Brown for arranging the
ceremony with Mayor Willie Brown in San Francisco and the Arts
Commission in New York City.

Digital photography strengthens field photography instruction.

The advent of the digital age of photography provides unique
opportunities for field photography instruction, reviewing work on
camera screens as it is made and on portable computers soon after,
examining exposure, composition and emotional impact. Group evening
reviews can also be conducted using digital projection for added
feedback. High resolution printers can be available to put some
images to the ultimate test.

The process can go full circle every day; opening files, reviewing success,
and printing some of the photographs made during that day, constantly going
back in the field, putting into practice lessons learned.

In my workshops, we use this real-time digital feedback to discuss technical
and aesthetic issues, tapping into emotional responses to landscape, working
toward images that are uniquely your own.

* Instant image review:
-reviewing work on camera screens as it is made
-remaking the photograph until it is right

* Technical Control:
-exposure check with histogram
-focus check
-depth of field check
-color balance check

* Aesthetic Impact:
-composition and emotional impact
-real 2d scene comprehension
-design and interplay of form analysis
-distillation of the essential
-silly inclusions can be seen

* Additional Advantages:
-group evening reviews can be conducted using digital projection
-high resolution printers to see photographs in their final form
